Treat every waitlist you join as a future data leak. Projects fold, marketing lists get sold, and the form and CRM tools behind allowlists get breached. When that happens, the attacker isn't holding a random email address — they're holding an address that provably belongs to someone who signs up for token launches. That is exactly the audience wallet-drainer phishing is written for, and an address that appears on several project lists is worth more to them than one that appears on one.

A per-project throwaway caps the blast radius:

  • • One project, one address. Generate a fresh temp address for each signup so no two leaked lists can be cross-referenced back to the same person.
  • • Finish the confirmation click in the same session — the inbox lives for 10 minutes by default and can be extended while you wait for the email.
  • • When a list eventually leaks, the phishing wave lands in a mailbox that no longer exists. Nothing to click, nothing to drain.
  • • Never reuse a throwaway across projects — reuse quietly rebuilds the linkable profile you were trying to avoid.
  • • Treat any later "urgent: claim now" email as hostile by default. Real claims happen through the project's verified site, not a link in your inbox.
  • • Decide upfront which kind of list it is. If a project will email claim instructions weeks later, a throwaway can't receive them — research lists get temp mail; claims you actually intend to collect need an address you'll still control.

Where Temp Mail Is the Wrong Tool

On a KYC'd exchange, your email is the root of account recovery. Withdrawal confirmations, new-device authorizations, anti-phishing codes, and password resets all route through the address on file. If that address was a 10-minute inbox, the account holding your funds now has a recovery channel that no longer exists — you haven't protected the account, you've orphaned it.

  • Custodial exchanges and brokers — anywhere a company holds coins on your behalf, the recovery email must outlive every trade
  • Anything that completed KYC — your legal identity is already tied to the account, so a disposable address adds no privacy there, only recovery risk
  • Hardware-wallet vendor accounts and crypto tax tools — firmware advisories and year-end tax documents have to reach you long after signup

Use a real, secured address for anything custodial: unique password, hardware-key two-factor authentication where the platform supports it. Save the throwaways for the waitlists.
