How Your Email Gets on Spam Lists

Website Sign-ups

Every time you sign up for a service, your email could be sold to third-party marketing companies or data brokers who compile spam lists.

Newsletter Subscriptions

Marketing newsletters often share subscriber lists with "partners" who flood your inbox with promotional content you never asked for.

Data Breaches

When companies get hacked, your email address ends up in databases sold on the dark web to spammers and scammers.

Hidden Checkboxes

Pre-checked "send me promotional emails" boxes during checkout or registration opt you into marketing lists without your explicit consent.

Where Spam Lists Actually Come From

Spam is rarely random. Your address travels along a few well-worn routes, and once it enters any of them, it gets copied faster than you can unsubscribe.

Scraper Bots

Automated crawlers harvest any address posted in plain text: forum signatures, comment sections, classified listings, public code repositories, club membership pages. If your address has ever appeared on a public web page, assume a bot has copied it. Posting a temp address instead costs the scraper its prize — by the time the list is used, the mailbox is gone.

Purchased and Resold Lists

Lists are a commodity. A retailer's "partner" buys access, that partner's partner buys it again, and breach dumps get folded into commercial lists along the way. This is why unsubscribing from one sender never shrinks your spam: the copy you removed yourself from is only one of many, and the others keep circulating.

Why Undeliverable Beats Filtered

A spam filter is damage control after the fact. The message was still sent, still accepted by your provider, and your address was confirmed live — senders track deliveries, and a delivered message keeps you on the list. Filtered mail also still costs you: false positives bury real messages, and one misclick on a phishing mail in the spam folder is all it takes.

An expired temp address is a different category of defense. Mail to it does not land in a junk folder — it cannot be delivered at all. There is nothing to filter, nothing to misclassify, and nothing for the sender to confirm. The list entry becomes a dead string. Filtering manages spam; expiry deletes the target.

A 10-Second Triage for Every Signup

Real Email

Anything you must recover or be reachable at: banking, government, employer, medical, and any account holding money or purchases you would dispute. If losing access would hurt, it gets the real address.

Alias

Ongoing but low-trust relationships: newsletters you actually read, shops you return to, forums you post in. An alias forwards to you long-term but can be shut off if one sender turns spammy — and tells you exactly who leaked it.

Temp Email

One-shot interactions: a verification code, a gated download, a coupon, a WiFi portal, a trial you are only sampling. If you cannot name a reason this sender would ever need to reach you again, the address should not outlive the signup.
